Divine Intolerance: How Your Nervous System Calls You Home
A specific, sacred phenomenon unfolds in the lives of midlife women. It arrives as a sudden, overwhelming inability to perform the roles, arrangements, and accommodations maintained with total competence for decades. Social obligations fulfilled without complaint now feel like an intolerable drain. Relationship dynamics managed through strategic quietness feel unviable. Career paths that once absorbed ambition feel hollow.
If you experience this profound shift, rest assured that your internal system remains intact.
You are experiencing Divine Intolerance. In my first solo book, Menopause Evolved: Embracing the MettaFemina Era, I explore this as the biological and spiritual moment when your nervous system stops absorbing what no longer serves your well-being, demanding that you return home to your own truth.
The Physiology of Accommodation For most of our adult lives, biology was chemically buffered to support group cohesion, relational caregiving, and social smoothing. High baseline levels of estrogen and oxytocin primed our brains toward the "tend-and-befriend" stress response. Our neurochemistry actively rewarded us with dopamine whenever we smoothed over conflict, held a complex household together, or prioritized the needs of others over internal signals.
We learned to live from the outside in. We relied on external metrics - approval, achievement, utility, and compliance - to confirm worth, while systematically overriding interoceptive awareness. Interoception is our brain’s ability to sense our internal landscape: the subtle tightening in the solar plexus, the shallowness of breath, the gut feeling arriving long before the mind rationalizes a decision. When we ignore these signals year after year, our bodies carry the record. Unprocessed grief, crossed boundaries, and suppressed desires accumulate as physical tension, systemic inflammation, and deep cellular exhaustion.
The Threshold of Divine Intolerance As we move through perimenopause and into postmenopause, our hormonal buffering thins. Neurological incentives to self-suppress dissolve. The gap between who you perform and who you are becomes a chasm you can no longer cross.
Divine Intolerance reflects a biological intelligence asserting itself. Your nervous system sets the boundaries you were unable to set when younger. It presents as:
A Biological No: A subtle physical contraction, a hollowness in the chest, or a sudden loss of energy when asked to give more than what is equitable or aligned.
The Release of People-Pleasing: An undeniable clarity that your time, emotional energy, and physical presence are finite, precious resources that cannot be squandered on superficial harmony.
A Call for Reciprocity: An imperative that primary relationships, work, and community must offer genuine emotional safety, mutual care, and authentic presence.

Nervous System Mastery: Moving from Reaction to Presence
Navigating this reckoning requires moving out of chronic sympathetic activation (fight-or-flight) and learning to regulate our nervous systems. As a naturopathic doctor who spends time on the yoga mat, hiking in nature, and practicing daily meditation, I know that grounding the nervous system is a daily biological practice. When wired and exhausted, our amygdala perceives minor friction as a major threat. By developing nervous system mastery, we expand our window of tolerance so that boundaries stem from a calm, unshakeable center rather than explosive rage.
Somatic Tracking: When discomfort or frustration arises, pause and bring awareness directly to the physical sensation in your body. Name it gently: "I notice a tightness in my throat." This simple act shifts neural activity from the reactive survival brain to the prefrontal cortex, diffusing the alarm.
Vagal Toning and Heart Coherence: Practice slow, diaphragmatic breathing where your exhale is longer than your inhale (for example, inhaling for 4 seconds, exhaling for 6). Practicing this for five minutes in the morning activates the vagus nerve, increases heart rate variability (HRV), and signals safety to every cell in your body.
Honoring the Biological Yes: Notice what expansive, grounded ease feels like in your physical body. Begin making choices—small ones at first, then larger ones—that elicit that feeling of internal alignment.
When you honor Divine Intolerance, your boundaries no longer require lengthy explanations, apologies, or defenses. They become quiet statements of fact. You stop asking for permission to inhabit your life. You offer the world something far more valuable than compliance: your whole, unedited, sovereign presence.
